UC Sustainable Food Policies Update: June 23, 2009

"Dear Sustainable Food Services Working Group Members,

Thank you for all your hard work, comments, direction, and guidance as we worked through the development of the final draft of the proposed UC Sustainable Food Services Policy. On Tuesday afternoon the UC Sustainability Steering Committee unanimously endorsed the draft policy. The next step is for the policy to be sent on to the VC of Administration for final comments. Then the Policy moves forward to President Yudoff for final approval and signing of the document.

I have attached “Final Draft” [as of June 23, 2009] which has been approved and will be sent on for you to share with your stakeholders. Matt has also found an article on Best Practices in the Foodservice Industry which he thought would be of interest to you.

So on behalf of Matt, Andy, and Myself, thank you once again and we look forward to working with all of you in the near future when we begin discussions on implementation of the policy!

UC Irvine Support for UC Sustainable Food Policies

We, members of the UC Irvine community, support the adoption of the proposed UC Sustainable Food Policies (draft as of June 3, 2009). The Policies include the following highlights:

  • With the overall goal of reducing the environmental impact of food purchases and dining operations while maintaining accessibility and affordability for all students, the University has set a goal of procuring 20% sustainable food products by the year 2020 for Campus Foodservice Operations.
  • The University will encourage dining operations to explore the use of third-party certifications for sustainable dining operations.  If cost effective, each campus will certify one facility by September 2010 through one of the following: (1) City or county's "green business" program, (2) Green Seal's Restaurants and Food Services Operations certification program, or (3) the Green Restaurant Association certification program.
  • By December 15, 2009, each campus will submit a report to the Office of the President that addresses how each campus plans to achieve their Sustainable Foodservice Practices goals.  Campuses will provide a yearly process report on these goals starting July 31, 2010.

We urge:
  • the UC Irvine representative to the University of California Office of the President Sustainability Steering Committee representative to vote in favor of the proposed policies at the next UCOP SSC Meeting on June 23, 2009 at UC Santa Barbara. 
  • for more UCI representation on sustainable food working groups, greater accountability, a continued commitment to minimizing greenhouse gases and achieving "Net Zero", and abiding by the various institutional policies UCI has signed onto (UC Policy on Sustainable Practices and American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment).

Goal: 50 Supporting Signatures by Friday, June 5, 2009.  73 as of Saturday, June 16, 2009, 2:01pm.
